Overview
A therapeutic and community-based model that uses the relationship with horses to support youth at risk, rebuilding trust, responsibility and belonging through a safe, culturally sensitive and deeply human experience.
Context
Many young people face exclusion, trauma or environments that weaken their sense of safety and purpose. In that context, working with horses offers a different space: one grounded not in abstract judgment, but in presence, emotional coherence and relationship. The horse responds to nonverbal language, requires calm and care, and allows young people to practice boundaries, empathy and self-regulation in a natural setting. This approach has been developed as a community accompaniment tool, especially relevant for programs focused on youth, wellness and the rebuilding of connection.
The challenge
The challenge was to design a program that would not remain a recreational activity. It needed clear therapeutic objectives, safety protocols, respect for the animal and cultural sensitivity, so it could adapt to different communities without losing depth. It was also necessary to translate field experience into a transferable methodology — a guide that facilitators, organizations and community leaders could apply with rigor, dignity and consistency.
